The Farmer’s Garden Review

Plantskydd Product Review : Squirrels

Last year I fenced in my vegetable garden to keep out rabbits and woodchucks. Thankfully, the fencing has eliminated these critters from eating my plants. I still have a big problem with squirrels. One of the things they do that annoys me is that they dig in areas where I have recently planted seeds. I cover my seeds with straw mulch making it easy to tell when an area has been disturbed. I’ve witnessed squirrels digging, so I know that it is not birds.

I tried Plantskydd repellant on a couple of my newly seeded beds this autumn. I sowed the seeds, covered them with straw as then sprayed this product on the straw. I’m happy to say that it worked and there were no sections of my beds where the seeds didn’t germinate because they had been dug up.

Plantskydd is recommended for year-round use to control deer, rabbits, elk, moose, hares, voles, squirrels, chipmunks, and other herbivores. This product works as an odor repellant against these animals. I didn’t think it had an offensive odor, but the animals do. It’s approved for use in organic gardens and listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). It’s recommended for use on flowers, perennials, fruit and vegetable gardens (not the edible parts), shrubs, trees, and bulbs. I used the premixed liquid version of this product.

Plantskydd is also available granular and concentrated powder formulas. One of the things I liked best about this product is that it does not need to be reapplied after a rainfall event if allowed to dry for 24 hours after application.

One caution about the liquid version of Plantskydd is that it has a deep red coloration and will stain wood, vinyl, concrete, furniture, fences, or other building surfaces. The company recommends the granular version of their product as a perimeter barrier.

I had success using this product and highly recommend it to other gardeners. I did not use the entire bottle and will be using the reminder next gardening season. I was given a bottle of Plantskydd for review. Although this animal repellant product was a gift, all opinions in this review are my own and I was in no way influenced by anyone at Plantskydd.
