Raccoon

Raccoons are small nocturnal mammals with fur in varying shades of grey or brown with distinct black “masks” on their faces.

They’re extremely adaptable and use their dexterous paws and agility to outsmart humans and prey.

Since raccoons are omnivores, they will eat about anything they come across. When it comes to your garden and lawn their favorites include sweet corn, strawberries, peas, fruit trees, and grubs.

Recognize Raccoon Damage

Since raccoons are nocturnal creatures, you may not notice the damage till morning making it difficult to identify.

Lawn damage – Raccoons will dig holes about 2 inches wide in lawns looking for insects, especially grubs.

Corn damage – raccoons will topple corn stalks and often leave the ears ripped open and half-eaten (wasteful, we know).

Lawn damage – The best solution is to remove the grubs. Once the food source has been removed so will the raccoon damage.
Plant and corn damage – Loud noises, automatic lights, and/or sprinkling garlic, chili powder, or blood meal around the garden have proven effective.
