Recognize Chicken Damage

Lawn and Plant Damage – Chickens cause damage when searching for insects in your garden and creating “dust baths” in cleared garden areas further halting the growth of other plants.

On top of insects, chickens enjoy freshly sown seeds and seedlings. Tender plants are easy for them to ingest while fully formed or taller plants aren’t affected by their presence.

Broody hens can lay a nest in tomatoes and other grassy areas and refuse to leave, ensure these hens are near their regular nesting areas to reduce the likelihood of them taking over your garden.

Lawn and plant damage – For best protection fence off areas and allow chickens to feed in zones.
Follow the “time zone gardening” procedure by planting vegetables that are produced around the same time. By doing so you can rotate chickens through these areas to provide insect protection when the plants are grown to a size that will not easily be ingested by chickens and before fruit sets on.
Keep plants in raised boxes and place rocks around plants to prevent the chickens from damaging their roots.
