Frequently Asked Questions about Plantskydd deer repellent

Safe, natural Plantskydd deer repellent

What is Plantskydd?

Plantskydd® is an animal repellent developed in Sweden — now made in the USA. It is made from 100% natural ingredients: dried blood (porcine and/or bovine), and vegetable oils. Proven effective against deer, elk, moose and rabbits.

Is Plantskydd safe to use?

Plantskydd contains no synthetic additives, is non-toxic and is not harmful to animals or the environment when used as directed. The 'active' ingredient is dried blood (porcine and/or bovine) — recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an environmentally safe ingredient and is exempt from EPA Pesticide Registration.
Normal precautions: wash hands after use; wash fruit and veggies before eating; do not ingest powder or liquid solution. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

How does it work?

Animals avoid plants before they bite—not after! Plantskydd repels by emitting an odor that browsing animals associate with predator activity. The odor is not unpleasant to applicators or planters. Proven* effective in extensive field trials against deer, elk, moose, rabbits, and opossum.

How often do I need to treat my plants and trees?

  • Treat plants before browse begins (spring or fall).

  • Frequency of application is dependent upon the growth rate of the plant. Always treat new growth until the plant has reached full size or leaf-out.

  • Plantskydd lasts up to 6 months over-winter on dormant plants and up to 4 months during the active growing season.

  • Ideally, Plantskydd® is applied in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is not as strong.

IMPORTANT: Apply solution on dry plants and allow to dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours before rain or watering.

Can I use Plantskydd on my veggie patch?

ORGANIC - Plantskydd Soluble Powder Concentrate has been Listed (trw-9589) by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) as suitable for use in the production of organic foods and fiber.

Plantskydd consists of 100% natural ingredients. Plantskydd's active repelling ingredient, dried blood (porcine), also acts as a high in nitrogen fertilizer. Do not apply directly onto edible parts of fruit, vegetables and other food crops; rather spray mainly inedible portion of plant. Wash any residue off fruit and vegetables before eating.

What formulation of Plantskydd is best for me?

  • 1 quart 'Ready-To-Use' SPRAYER will treat approx. 100 plants 1 ft high. Ideal for small gardens (or as a sample to prove to yourself that "Plantskydd really works!")

  • 1.32 gallon (5 qt.) 'Ready-To-Use' JUG will treat about 400-600 plants 1 ft high. Ideal for large properties. Favored by golf course and municipal landscape personnel—where multiple spot applications are required.

  • 1 lb. Soluble powder concentrate will treat about 200-300 plants 1 ft high. Ideal for those requiring increased flexibility to mix just the right amount of PlantskyddŽ at varying dilution rates e.g., nursery, forestry applications.

  • 2.2 lb. Soluble powder concentrate will treat about 400-600 plants 1 ft high. Ideal for those requiring increased flexibility to mix just the right amount of Plantskydd® at varying dilution rates e.g., nursery, forestry applications.

How long can I keep Plantskydd in storage, before use?

  • Soluble powder concentrate Plantskydd® in its original packaging lasts 3 years when kept in a dry, dark, cool (not freezing) place.

  • Once mixed into solution, use within a few days. Plantskydd is a 100% natural food grade product and will start to “go off” in warm weather. Tightly re-seal unused powder and store as above.

  • Ready-to-Use Liquid Plantskydd should be used within a few days of opening the sealed container. Store in cool location, keep from freezing. Protect from heat.

Does Plantskydd work on conifer and broadleaf plants equally well?

Yes! See label for dilution rates and application methods.

Any advice for protecting fruit trees?

If you’re planting out young whips of fruit trees, try coating the whip using a paint brush and a thick solution of Plantskydd (We recommend soluble powder concentrate—follow directions on label). If subject to spring or summer browse, spray trees when the leaves have formed.

Anything in my landscape I should not treat with Plantskydd?

  • We suggest you test samples of sensitive plants before treating large numbers. If the leaves curl on test plants, rinse with a fine spray of water and dilute Plantskydd further (e.g. 1 pkg to 2-3 gallons water) prior to re-applying. Plantskydd will darken leaves temporarily—they return to their normal color in a couple of days.

  • For aesthetic reasons, use on very fuzzy leaves like Santolina, Lamb’s Ears and Lavender is not recommended. Fortunately, these plants are usually not preferred by our furry friends.

Will Plantskydd hurt my dog?

Some users have reported that the family dog is quite enamoured with Plantskydd when it is still wet on the plants. It will not harm animals but it’s best to leave Fido inside until the treated plants are dry.
